What we handle
Transmission fluid service
Transmission fluid cools, lubricates and, in automatics, does the work of shifting. Heat breaks it down over time. Many modern automatics and CVTs need one exact fluid type.
Diagnosis
Shifting problems can come from low or worn fluid, a sensor, a solenoid or the engine computer. We read codes and test before recommending a major repair.
Transmission replacement
When a transmission has internal damage, replacement is often the practical fix. It's part of the heavy-line work we take on, along with engine replacements and timing chains.
Differentials, 4WD and transfer cases
All-wheel and four-wheel-drive vehicles have extra gearboxes with their own fluid. These get overlooked until they get noisy.
Axles, CV joints and driveshafts
Clicking on turns or a vibration on acceleration can point to worn axles, CV joints or driveshaft components.
Is "lifetime" transmission fluid really lifetime?
Some manufacturers call their transmission fluid "lifetime" fluid, but many of the same owner's manuals list a fluid service interval for severe service, which includes towing, hot weather, and stop-and-go driving. If your vehicle has high miles and the fluid has never been serviced, ask us before you decide. The right answer depends on the vehicle and its history.
Shifting complaints can start as engine problems. See check engine light diagnostics and axles, CV joints and suspension.
Transmission & Drivetrain FAQ
How do I know if my transmission is slipping?
A slipping transmission feels like the engine revs climb without the car accelerating to match, or like a gear briefly lets go. Other signs include delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse and harsh or erratic shifts.
How often should transmission fluid be changed?
It varies widely by vehicle. Some manufacturers list intervals of 30,000 to 60,000 miles for severe service, while others describe the fluid as lifetime under normal use. Check your owner's manual, and keep in mind that towing, heat and stop-and-go driving count as severe service.
Do you replace transmissions?
Yes. Transmission replacement is part of the heavy-line work we handle, along with engine replacements and timing chains.
Do you service differentials and transfer cases?
Yes. We service differentials, 4WD systems and transfer cases, along with axles, CV joints and driveshafts.
What color should transmission fluid be?
Most automatic transmission fluid starts out red or pink. Fluid that's dark brown or black, or smells burnt, is a sign it's worn out or the transmission is running hot. Some vehicles use different fluid colors, so check your owner's manual.
