Signs your brakes need attention

  • A high-pitched squeal when you brake. Many pads have a metal wear tab that squeals on purpose.
  • Grinding or a metal-on-metal sound, which usually means the pads are worn through
  • A pedal that feels soft or spongy, or sinks toward the floor
  • The car pulls to one side when you brake
  • Vibration or pulsing in the pedal or steering wheel when you slow down
  • A red brake warning light or an amber ABS light on the dash
  • A burning smell after hard braking, or stopping distances that feel longer

What a brake inspection covers

Pads and shoes

We measure how much friction material is left and look for uneven wear, which can point to a sticking caliper or slide pin.

Rotors and drums

We check thickness, scoring and runout. Warped or worn rotors are the usual cause of a pulsing pedal.

Calipers, hoses and lines

We look for leaks, seized pistons and cracked rubber lines. Any of these can cause pulling or a soft pedal.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. We check its level and condition against your manufacturer's service schedule.

ABS and warning lights

When a warning light is on, we read the stored fault codes and test the sensor or circuit involved instead of guessing.

Why grinding brakes cost more the longer you wait

Worn pads are a routine replacement. Once a pad wears down to its steel backing, it starts cutting into the rotor, and a pad job turns into pads plus rotors, sometimes calipers too. Carmel driving means a lot of gentle stops at roundabouts and lights, so pads often wear gradually and the warning signs are easy to tune out. If you hear noise, have the brakes checked.

Brakes and tires work together. If your tires are worn or out of alignment, your stopping distances suffer too. See our tire service and alignment pages.

Brake Repair FAQ

How do I know if I need new brake pads or rotors?

Squealing usually means the pads are close to their wear limit. Grinding, or a pulsing pedal, usually means the rotors are worn or warped too. The only way to be sure is to measure them, which is part of a brake inspection.

How often should my brakes be inspected?

Have the brakes inspected at least once a year or whenever the tires are rotated. Have them checked right away if you notice noise, vibration or a change in how the pedal feels. Your owner's manual lists the brake fluid service interval for your vehicle.

Is it safe to drive with the brake warning light on?

Not for long. A red brake light can mean low fluid or a hydraulic problem, and an amber ABS light means the anti-lock system has a fault. Have it checked as soon as possible: book online, or if you're not sure the car is safe to drive in, call us at 317-626-5312.

Do you repair brakes on all makes and models?

Yes. Despite the Motorwerks name, we work on all makes and models, not just German cars.

Can I drop my car off for brake work outside business hours?

Yes. We offer after-hours drop-off and pickup, and vehicles that stay overnight are parked in a gated lot under video surveillance.
