When it's time for new tires
- Tread is at or near 2/32". In the penny test, Lincoln's whole head shows.
- The tread wear bars are flush with the tread
- Uneven wear on the inside or outside edge, or cupping across the tread
- Cracks in the sidewall or tread, or a bulge or bubble anywhere on the tire
- Vibration at highway speed that balancing doesn't fix
- A tire that keeps losing air
- Tires that are several years old. Rubber ages even when tread remains, so check the date code on the sidewall.
Tire repair: patch or replace?
Repairable punctures
A small puncture, such as from a nail or screw, in the main tread area can usually be repaired properly from the inside of the tire.
Not repairable
Damage to the sidewall or shoulder, large punctures, or a tire that was driven flat usually means the tire needs to be replaced.
Pairs and sets
On many all-wheel-drive vehicles, a big difference in tread depth between tires can strain the drivetrain. Ask before replacing just one tire.
After new tires
New tires are the right time for an alignment check. Bad alignment can wear a new set unevenly in a few thousand miles.
Indiana weather and your tires
Tire pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in temperature. That's why the tire pressure light often comes on during the first cold morning of fall. Check your pressures against the sticker in the driver's door jamb, not the number on the tire sidewall.
Most Carmel drivers run all-season tires year-round. If you commute early in the morning or drive through a lot of snow, ask us whether a different tire makes sense for your vehicle. Also see wheel alignment and brake repair.
Tires & Tire Repair FAQ
How do I know when I need new tires?
Replace tires when the tread reaches 2/32 of an inch, when the wear bars are flush with the tread, or if you see sidewall cracks, bulges or uneven wear. Tire age matters too, so check the date code on the sidewall.
Can you repair a flat tire?
Often, yes. A small puncture in the main tread area, such as from a nail or screw, can usually be repaired. Sidewall or shoulder damage, large punctures, or a tire that was driven flat usually means replacement.
Why does my tire pressure light come on when it gets cold?
Tire pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10 degree Fahrenheit drop in air temperature, so the first cold mornings of fall often trigger the light. Set your pressures to the numbers on the driver's door jamb sticker. If the light stays on, have the tires and sensors checked.
Should I get an alignment with new tires?
Yes. An alignment check with new tires helps them wear evenly and last longer, especially if your old tires showed uneven wear.
How often should tires be rotated?
Many manufacturers recommend rotating tires about every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, which often lines up with an oil change. Check your owner's manual for your vehicle's interval.
