Battery, Starting & Charging Repair in Carmel, IN

When a car won't start, it's natural to blame the battery, and sometimes that's right. But a weak alternator, a failing starter, corroded cables or something draining power overnight can look exactly the same from the driver's seat.

Evolution Motorwerks tests the whole starting and charging system, and repairs other electrical problems, on all makes and models. That way you replace the part that actually failed.

Battery, starter or alternator? Common clues

  • Slow, labored cranking, usually a weak battery or poor cable connections
  • A single click and no crank, often the starter or its connection
  • The battery light comes on while you're driving, pointing to the charging system
  • Headlights or dash lights dim or flicker
  • The car starts with a jump but dies again soon after
  • The battery is dead again after sitting overnight, a possible parasitic drain
  • A battery more than three to five years old

How we track down starting and charging problems

Battery test

We load-test the battery to see whether it can still deliver the current needed to start the engine, not just whether it shows a voltage.

Charging system

We check alternator output under load. A weak alternator can quietly drain a new battery and leave you stranded again.

Starter and connections

Corroded terminals, loose grounds and worn starter motors all cause no-start conditions. We test before replacing anything.

Parasitic drain

If the battery keeps dying overnight, something may be staying on after you shut the car off. We trace the circuit drawing power.

Other electrical repairs

We also diagnose and repair wiring faults, blown fuses, lighting and accessory problems.

Indiana winters are hard on batteries

Cold weather reduces a battery's available power at the same time thicker oil makes the engine harder to turn over. That's why a weak battery often fails on the first really cold morning. Summer heat ages batteries too, so a battery that made it through August may give out in January.

If your battery is three or more years old, have it tested before winter. Some starting problems are really engine problems, so see our engine diagnostics page as well.

Battery, Starting & Charging FAQ

How long does a car battery last?

Most car batteries last about three to five years. Heat, short trips, frequent idling and heavy electrical loads can shorten that. Having the battery tested before winter is a good habit once it's a few years old.

How can I tell if it's my battery or my alternator?

If the car cranks slowly or not at all but runs fine after a jump, the battery is a likely suspect. If the car dies again shortly after a jump, or the battery light comes on while driving, the alternator or charging system may be the problem. Testing both tells you for sure.

Why does my car battery keep dying?

A battery that keeps dying may be worn out, may not be getting recharged by a weak alternator, or may be drained overnight by a component that stays on. Corroded or loose connections can also cause it.

What does the battery light on my dashboard mean?

The battery warning light usually means the charging system isn't keeping up. It's often an alternator, belt or wiring problem, not just the battery. The car may run only until the battery is drained, so have it checked soon.
